Fence painting is priced per linear foot of fence, with height and style (picket, privacy, rail) as the key variables. Both sides and end-grain absorption must be factored into material calculations.
Fence Surface Area
Area = LF × H × 2 sides × gap factor (picket = 0.7; privacy = 1.0)
Example
150 LF of 6-ft privacy fence: 150 × 6 × 2 × 1.0 = 1,800 sq ft paintable surface
Waste factor: 20% for picket fences (end grain and gaps); 10% for solid privacy
Walk the fence perimeter and measure total linear footage. Note height changes (grade transitions). Identify fence style: full privacy boards (100% surface coverage), picket (60–70% surface coverage), or rail (30–40% coverage).
Both sides of a privacy fence = 2× the one-side area. Picket fences on a property line — often only one side is accessible. Confirm scope before pricing. Painting one side of a 6-ft privacy fence vs. both sides is a 100% labor difference.
Rough-sawn wood absorbs stain at 150–200 sq ft/gal. Smooth boards: 250–350 sq ft/gal. New pressure-treated wood: let weather 6–12 months before staining (test with water beading — if it beads, it's not ready). End-grain posts absorb 3–4× more than flat surfaces.
Set a per-linear-foot rate based on fence height and style. 6-ft privacy: $3.50–$6.00/LF (both sides). 4-ft picket: $2.00–$4.00/LF. 3-rail ranch fence: $1.50–$2.50/LF. Adjust for condition (new vs. weathered).
Wood posts are end-grain and absorb 3–4× more stain. Add $5–$10 per post for extra material and application time. Metal hardware (hinges, latches) should be masked or painted with metal primer first.
Quote fence painting by LF, not by hour
Per-LF pricing is faster to produce, easier for clients to compare, and rewards your efficiency. Build your hourly cost into your LF rate internally.
Check for new PT wood that won't accept stain
Pressure-treated wood fresh from the lumber yard can't absorb stain for 6–12 months. Test by spraying water — if it beads, the wood is not ready. Including a 'test for stain-readiness' step in your estimate protects you from a failed job on new fences.
Offer a two-year maintenance package
Fences need re-staining every 2–3 years. Offer a pre-booked return visit at a 10% discount for clients who book now. Recurring fence work is low-competition and highly profitable.
Fence painting runs $3–$7/LF for a 6-ft privacy fence (both sides), including labor and materials in 2026. Picket and rail fences are $2–$4/LF. New pressure-treated wood may not accept stain and may require a different product — test before pricing.
An airless sprayer is 3–5× faster than brush on privacy fences. However, overspray masking (landscaping, adjacent structures) adds 30–60 minutes of setup. On a 150 LF fence, the sprayer is almost always worth the setup time. Picket fences can be back-rolled after spraying to push stain into all surfaces — factor this into productivity.
Measure each stepped section separately and note the height. A fence that steps down a hillside in 6-inch increments has variable heights that affect material quantity. Use an average height across each section and multiply by the section's linear footage for an accurate material count.
New, properly dried wood typically accepts one coat of penetrating stain well. Solid stains and paints always require two coats. If the owner wants a darker color or maximum UV protection, two coats are recommended. Price two coats as the default — it's easier to offer a one-coat discount than to add a second coat after the estimate is accepted.
