Drywall Level of Finish Guide

The finish level you target directly impacts your mud and labor costs. Most remodelers aim for Level 4.

Level 1

Basic Tape

Tape embedded in compound, excess wiped. No topping coat. For areas that will be concealed above ceilings or in service corridors.

Mud usage: MinimalBest for: Above drop ceilings
Level 2

Single Coat

Tape plus one coat over tape and fasteners. Used in garages, warehouses, and storage spaces where appearance is secondary.

Level 3

Two Coats
